The name "Oltremontano" is a reference to the Flemish polyphonists, who dominated and defined the European music world of the 15th and 16th century and were known in Italy as the "oltremontani" i.e. "those from across the mountains". The core of Oltremontano consists of sackbuts and cornetts, which corresponds with the municipal band (Piffari) of northern Italy and northern Germany.
